ABOUT THE LONELY ENTERTAINER

1967, Downtown Los Angeles.

 

This is a story of four lives happening simultaneously, unrelated, distanced only by 3 degrees of separation.

 

For years Levi has obediently showed up, relatively on time and relatively sober, playing his gig 7 nights a week at a little unknown hole in the wall, The Magic Cocktail Lounge.

 

Night after night he sings the songs that bring the crowd back to those brighter days. He meets a lot of important people, but he can never remember their names.

 

One night, just like any other, he crawls off stage and back to the bar to redeem his last drink ticket, he notices an intelligent, unafraid young women sitting at his chair.

 

Nervously, and with intent, he musters up the courage to make himself noticed; his eyes wide and his mouth a mess as he slurs the words, "YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL!", in her direction. He wonders if he said that out loud.

 

She responds, turning gracefully around, facing Levi, she writes a few words on a napkin, kisses it, lays it down on the bar and pushes it in his direction. She stares at him, then disappears before Levi can make a fool of himself once more.

 

The napkin reads:

 

I LIKE YOUR SONG.

IT TAKES ME BACK.

PLAY A SONG FOR ME?

 

SAME TIME, SAME PLACE.
